MA Raumstrategien

Shrinking City Berlin, Teil 2 / Shrinking City Berlin, Part 2

English Version:

The utopian practice of creating spaces of possibilities: Construction of a hybrid spatial structure in the context of the inner-city

The symptoms of Berlin's current growth are noticeable everywhere: Urban qualities of diverse uses and modes of appropriation of public space, undefined places, open remnants and fallow land and their manifold potential uses are massively obliterated and replaced by monofunctional facilities for consumption, traffic, commerce and residential buildings.
In this past winter semester, the seminar Shrinking City examined various urban places that are exposed in the sense of the described changes or, in contrast, still form empty spaces, open spaces or peripheries. The focus was on individual psychogeographic local explorations and their adequate forms of documentation, followed by personal and singular temporary interventions in the respective location.
The one-week compact seminar Shrinking City Part 2 will bundle and implement these nomadic experiences and insights in one place. On a vacant inner city area, a fallow part of the ExRotaprint site in Wedding, the participants of the seminar build a hybrid structure that addresses the environment in the most diverse ways possible, unites a wide range of uses and transfers social ideas into a spatial-architectural language. Thus, the seminar refers spatially and thematically to the seminar "The local - artistic action in contested spaces (2) Monuments to the common good" by Prof. Daniela Brahm and offers the possibility of a concrete design implementation.
The students work within sight of 19th century facades, fire walls, post-war modernism, Lidl supermarket, large car park, new rental housings and remaining space in an undeveloped and sought-after central city center location.
At the core of the seminar is the construction process, in which ideas and ideals are implemented creatively and spatially. It is about a fundamental analysis of the place, its geography, the immediate spatial and social context. Above all, a form is to be found which, sensitive to the genius loci, forms an alternative to monofunctional complete development and empty space. This requires an intensive constructive dialogical process of ideas and form finding and implementation, high social responsibility, openness and equal rights. After completion, the built structure should stop and continue to be used.
