Politik des Raums, Teil 2 / Politics of space, Part 2

English Version:

Building on the block seminar “Politics of Space, Part 1” from WS 2018/19 – which thematised notions of the production of space, urbanism and artistic autonomy, as well as ideals for living in post-industrial and post-digital society – the follow-up seminar “Politics of Space, Part 2” of SS 2019 serves as an introduction to the foundations of artist-discursive practices, in particular in the theory of signs and images.
The seminar will investigate the extent to which language-based/conceptual structures and image-based structures can be integrated, as well as the extent to which visual structures are organised linguistically. The functional exchange between concept and image will be discussed in relation to their respective technologies. In the second stage, the semantic implications of text-image relations will be mapped out in more detail. Parallel to this, metaphor, allegory and symbol – the central concepts in language and image theory – will be thematised in their historical dimension.
Building on the fundamentally ground-breaking linguistic studies of Ferdinand de Saussure, who embedded the linear connection of the linguistic sign in its associative meaning, in Elements of Semiology Roland Barthes introduces the oppositional pairing of “form / substance”, a device that appears to be well-suited to the task of analysing the relation between aesthetic phenomena and the constitution of meaning. Further semiological points of reference include Edmund Leach, who carried out investigations relating to the sensory modalities between architecture, music, fashion, theatre, etc.; as well as Umberto Eco, who highlighted the emancipation of the reader and the observer as the interpreter of works.
Additionally, the seminar will discuss artistic positions which focus on the production of space in relation to society, as well as the creation of conflicting modes of being public.
