• Based on your work, the next step is to decide on admission to the entrance exam.

For the personal online consultation, we recommend that you document your own work photographically beforehand so that you can then present and discuss it digitally in the video conference via screen sharing.
 

THE DESIGN OF THE DIGITAL PORTFOLIO

The design of the digital portfolio is the first step in the entrance examination. Applicants are expected to produce artistic and creative work that demonstrates independent artistic expression and an explicit interest in the field of stage and costume design. The portfolio should comprise approx. 20-30 works.

We ask you to photograph or scan all non-digital works and send us the file as a PDF by e-mail.
 

The following guidelines must be observed when presenting the portfolio:

The size of the PDF document must not exceed 45 megabytes.

It is recommended to present the work in DIN A4 landscape format on one page per work. In addition, a cover page and a final page with a summary can be added.

It is recommended that the work is sorted according to importance and topicality. The portfolio should be opened with the most important work.

General notes on the work to be submitted

The department does not specify a topic or form.

It is important that the works in the portfolio are individually designed and, in addition to a fundamental artistic aptitude and creativity, also express that the applicants are applying for their desired specialisation. 

A good selection of works is important because the first task when applying for a place at university is to think intensively about your own artistic identity, talents and objectives. 

The creative artistic personality of the applicant should be recognisable in the portfolio. Works that look like they were created under supervision should be avoided. Artistic and creative work samples that demonstrate a certain continuity and intensity are highly desirable. Drawing is also highly valued in all degree programmes. Student projects and works on our website can serve as inspiration.

A short note should be included next to each work, indicating the original size and the technique used.

It is not necessary to physically hand over your portfolio, as we will not print it out but view it on screen.

Please ensure that the name of the PDF contains the application number so that all submissions can be clearly assigned.

The result of the pre-selection will be communicated at the end of this phase and forms the basis for participation in the entrance examination.

The portfolio should contain a loose collection of recent works such as artistic works (e.g. paintings, watercolours, prints, drawings etc.) and also works such as sketches of ideas, photographic works, experiments and designs.  Please sort your works according to relevance, i.e. those that are most important to you at the top.

If you would like to present videos, film works or animations, do not upload them publicly to a portal such as Vimeo or YouTube and insert the link in the appropriate place in the PDF. Video presentations should not be longer than 5 minutes in total. We cannot open channels such as Instagram or external websites.

We ask for very short, simple, keyword-like information about each work on the medium/size/technique, possibly date.

The works will be judged, not their presentation. Please refrain from using decorative elements such as passe-partouts, typography, gifs or clipart.

For reasons of equal opportunities and to improve the assessment of artistic works, please refrain from using AI / AI and AI / AI-generated images.
