Students with disabilities and chronic illness

Support for your studies - Advice and compensation for disadvantages for students and applicants

For people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, mental health issues, and other impairments, as well as for care leavers and students with children or caregiving responsibilities.

Applicants and students with disabilities or chronic or mental illnesses can contact the “Representative for the Interests of Students with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses” for confidential advice on applying and planning their studies. According to the Berlin Higher Education Act (BerlHG), universities are obliged in §§ 4, 9, and 31 to take into account the special needs of applicants and students.

The counseling is integrated into the office of the General Student Counseling of the Department for Student Affairs, so that as a rule all concerns and questions regarding study design (including exchange students), examination matters, etc. can be clarified promptly and competently.

The weißensee kunsthochschule berlin has appointed Ms. Susan Lipp for this responsible task. Her representative is Ms. Brigitte Dierker.

  • Students and applicants, who, due to a disability, chronic illness, or special needs, are unable to attend all courses or take exams within the specified time frame or framework, for example, can contact the Student Advisory Service. The same applies to parents, pregnant women, caregivers, and care leavers. Please send an email to the Student Advisory Service for advice.

  • In a confidential meeting, the options available to students and applicants with regard to an appropriate form of study or examination will be discussed. After consultation with the person concerned, the relevant departments will be involved. In practice, upon request, the entire study situation will be reviewed with regard to the specific needs of students with disabilities and individually adapted.

  • Where possible, exam accommodations are already offered to applicants who have to take an artistic entrance exam.

  • Students and Applicants can submit a request for adjustments to their studies and exams. You can submit a request for compensation for disadvantages to Susan Lipp.

  • This also applies to students who have changed universities and to guest or exchange students.

Compensation for disadvantages is a formal regulation designed to compensate for impairments caused by illness or disability. The aim is to ensure that everyone has the same opportunities during their studies.

It would be desirable to clarify the possibility of applying to StudierendenWERK BERLIN for integration assistance for which a fee is charged, e.g. sign language interpreters for persons who are not yet enrolled, i.e. student applicants.

The newer buildings on campus are barrier-free. Unfortunately, most of the rooms above the first floor in the old buildings are not barrier-free, as no elevators can be installed due to the existing monument protection.
