How to reflect artistically on the evidence of colonial violence? How to intervene in an ethnological museum while the restitution of looted material culture takes place? How to draw speculative futures?
The Ethnological Museum Berlin houses around 10,000 objects attributed to the area of present-day Tanzania. A large part of the objects were appropriated - often violently - during the period of German and British colonial rule. The workshop exhibition Leerstellen.Ausstellen - Objects from Tanzania and the Colonial Archive interrogates, remembers, and re-examines the museum's objects and their history. Within this exhibition, students engaged artistically with notions and remnants of colonial violence under the title MINGLED LIVING FORCES. Through performance, installation, print, sculpture, painting, video, and VR, they explore the meaning of collecting and exhibiting in the context of domination, as well as the perpetuation of colonial relationships, and speculate on future museum spaces once human remains and material culture have been returned.
MINGLED LIVING FORCES was developed in the context of the tandem seminars Colonial Presents: Artistic and Curatorial Interrogating and Zeichnen Farbe Fläche - Spatial Drawing at the weißensee school of art and design berlin during the Winter Semester 22 /23. Wie können die Spuren kolonialer Gewalt künstlerisch reflektiert werden? Wie kann man in einem ethnologischen Museum aesthetisch intervenieren, während die Rückgabe geraubter materieller Kultur und menschliche Überreste stattfindet? Wie lassen sich spekulative Zukünfte entwerfen?
Im Ethnologischen Museum Berlin befinden sich rund 10.000 Objekte, die dem Gebiet des heutigen Tansania zugeschrieben werden. Ein großer Teil der Objekte wurde in der Zeit der deutschen und britischen Kolonialherrschaft – oft gewaltvoll – angeeignet. Die Werkstattausstellung Leerstellen.Ausstellen – Objekte aus Tansania und das koloniale Archiv befragt, erinnert und betrachtet die Objekte des Museums und ihre Geschichte neu. Im Rahmen der Ausstellung haben sich Studierende unter dem Titel MINGLED LIVING FORCES mit kolonialer Gewalt auseinandergesetzt. Mit Performance, Installation, Druck, Skulptur, Malerei, Video und VR erforschen sie die Bedeutung von Sammeln und Ausstellen im Kontext von Herrschaft sowie die Aufrechterhaltung von kolonialen Beziehungen, und spekulieren über zukünftige Museumsräume, wenn menschliche Überreste und materielle Kultur zurückgegeben worden sind.
MINGLED LIVING FORCES entstand im Rahmen der Tandem-Seminare „Colonial Presents: Artististic and Curatorial Interrogating“ und „Zeichnen Farbe Fläche - Spatial Drawing“ an der weißensee kunsthochschule berlin im Wintersemester 22/23. Kuratorische Entwicklung und Lehre: Juana Awad und Elaine Bonavia
