Flores of the Loom
[PREVIEW]
Research project - loin looms of Flores & surrounding islands in comparison. Flores' looms on the catwalk as a sculpture - A look from an artistic perspective!
In view of this, of course, immediately asks the urgent question: "Where is the pedestal, citizens of Flores?“
As a first step, we’ll take a historical review and show the status of museal collections on the subject of Flores in its time.
The spirit of Flores in East Indonesia introduces you to its soulful looms....an ongoing project that will probably take shape by the end of 2025......

According to a photo of Tillema, made in 1924/25 close Maumere, this sketch should show another type of Sikka loom. Its warp beam is resting on stones!

A Larantuka loom in top- and side-view….without Pippi Langstrumpf! Technically almost equal to other stake loom-types like Sikka & Ende on Eastern Flores.

An Atoni loom on Timor Island in top- and side-view comes pretty similar like the stake loom-types on Flores Island. All of those are externally-braced, but body-tensioned types of ground looms! According to Yoshimoto these belong to category B of loom-types, using a circular warp.

A Ndona loom from Ende regency on Flores in top- and side-view. With its circular warp and its warp beam hold by stakes is technically similar to the Sikka loom and other ground loom-types on Flores and neighborhood! But details count!

Another loin loom from Manggarai, using a flat warp wrapped on a huge warp board. That gets hold by two ancient Y-shaped posts, fixed on two rails for modern circumstances.

Perspective view of a loin loom found on Lembata Island, east of Flores/Indonesia. According to an photo of Christopher D. Buckley in "Looms, Weaving and the Austronesian Expansion“. Notice its specific forked branch, that can be found in several loom models on Flores.

Another stake loom-type of body-tensioned ground loom, as usual on Flores. Notice its bamboo poles and the hanging-down rope loops, that hold the warp beam in position. An experienced sculptor may ask: Is this a vision or the serpent horse?

A stake loom-type of body-tensioned loin looms found as presented by Yoshimoto back in the 90s. Honestly: May you have expected this "crocodile on the rocks“ supporting your weaving?

A rare foot-braced loin loomsfound on Papua in Indonesia as reported by Goslings 1928/1929. Actually none is left, except on museal and book shelves! Revitalize it!

As a photo of Buckley et al. 2023 shows, the endings of this handcarved breast beam shows crocodiles; one‘s closed, the other remains opened. A good crocodile! Male of the Sobei are skilled wood carvers.

A stake loom-type of loin looms found on Sumba Island, close to Flores‘ south coast. It’s using authentic branches for the warp poles and other components of the loom.

A timbered warping device of Bima weavers on Flores‘ West coast (Manggarai). They weave flat warps, but preparation is done like a false circular warp. Just in last step the single starter rod gets exchanged by to whip sticks, what makes the flat warps! That‘s it, that‘s genius - these "primitives“!

A photo of Ernst Vatter back in 1925 shows a weaver busy with her self-constructed warping frame, but most of it keeps in the twilight. This bird view may set to the right perspective.
