Sommersemester 2024, BA/MA Visuelle Kommunikation VK_Startseite

✎ · A Convenient Illusion, 2024

Moral is what differentiates us humans from animals. We can feel empathy and let our actions be guided by a moral understanding. This humanity is the basis of the unversially recognised human rights which were declared by the United Nations in 1948.

Despite this, neutrality is considered a high good. Those who remain neutral in a conflict and act “level-headed”, are most likely considered fair and morally superior. But is that really true? Can neutrality in the face of severe injustices and of human rights violations really be a moral act?

A Convenient Illusion documents all of the impressions I’ve come across as part of my preoccupation with the escalating conflict between the State of Israel and the Palestinian population in the West Bank and Gaza. Since October 7th 2024, the world has taken a new interest and paid special attention to what has been happening in the affected area — but what are they paying attention to? What keeps being left out? What moral standards do we hold each side of the conflict to? What have we normalised?

A documentation of my disbelief, anger and understanding of morality.
