Cyanotype animation, audio


This project is an animation, and a poetic journey of Spix’s Macaw, the blue parrot that has been extinct in the nature since the year 2000. Spix’s Macaw has been suffering from habitat loss, illegal trade and other problems, which left us with just few birds held in captivity. A big international restoration project made it possible to release a number of human-raised birds into the wild in 2022, and today they are learning to live in their natural habitat, and already brought to life a couple of new birds, making it the first case of successful bird species reintroduction so far.

 

The animation frames have been produced with cyanotype technique. Cyanotype here is linked to the bird’s latin name Cyanopsitta spixii, as well as its color, and accentuates the natural-ness and the narrative of disappearance, or being washed off.
