Alien Tourists

Was ist menschlich?

Alien Tourists

In his 1955 short-story “Human Is”, Philip K. Dick tells the story of an alien who comes to earth. Having informed himself about human life with outdated terranean literature, the alien tourist appears on the human planet emulating the charms of an 18th Century gentleman.

This misinformation on contemporary inter-human relations leads to the mind of a cold and callous scientist being replaced by the psyche of a doting, congenial alien. As a consequence of this, the scientist’s/alien’s wife finds herself faced with the questions of who of the two she should try to save? Of what, exactly, does it mean to be “human”? And of who is more foreign: man or alien?

The question of the foreign explored in this work of science fiction is also addressed in the group show Alien Tourists. The seven exhibiting artists showcase the mood and air of the foreign by examining how it is manifested in topics as diverse as Hollywood, Africa, the family, traditions or simply the scintillating surface of an image.

Showing for only three days, the exhibition will be transformed every night, be it by altering the hanging of the works or changing the actual pieces displayed.

La chose

Alien Tourists is the second exhibition of the artists’ collective

La chose.

In October 2009 La chose organised and curated their first exposition, Spirits, held in the Stattbad Wedding. Exhibiting the work of 23 international artists, the show proved to be a great success, attracting over 1000 visitors in four days. Alien Tourists will be held in a much smaller format at the Forgotten Bar Project and will feature new works by seven of the artists shown during Spirits.

Showing art in unusual places as well as bringing together diverse groups of artists are the objectives that led to the formation of La chose in 2009.

La chose does not define itself as a permanent institution. Rather, it is understood that the collective´s constellation may vary according to ideas and projects.
