(English version further down)

OPEN CALL >EDITION WEISSENSEE

Lasst Euch was einfallen!

Bevor Du deinen Beitrag einreichst, solltest du ihn signieren.

Denkt Euch was aus!

Lisa

OPEN CALL > EDITION WEISSENSEE

to ALL students and staff of KHB Weissensee!
Registration until 6.12.19

What is an edition?
editio - Latin for 'publishing'

In printmaking, editions are traditionally understood as duplicating an artistic work by means of printmaking reproduction, thus allowing several people to participate in or to own this work. Print reproductions are often more affordable than 'originals', whereby the reproduction of artistic works can also be understood as a form of democratisation. An edition is a wonderful format to share your work with others and to collect work from others.

What can my contribution to Edition Weissensee be?
It can be an image or a text, either printed or produced manually in series (making the 'same' thing x times). At the center is the idea of sharing and exchange.
The often strict guidelines of the traditional printmaking edition should be questioned! What is an original, what is a print? Does every print have to look the same or can there be many different versions of a work?

How many prints / serials do I have to make?
This will be announced on December 8, 2019. The number of prints (= edition) is determined by the number of participants. Many participants = many prints / parts = high circulation = long range!
By agreeing to participate in Edition Weissensee you declare your willingness to make as many prints/pieces as there will be participants - no more, and above all, no less!
The amount of circulation will likely influence your decision on what you want to contribute. An edition of 50 is very time consuming to realise in etching - but much easier with a riso or digital printer!

Which format must my contribution have?
Your contribution must be A5 size (21 x 14.85 cm), not smaller or larger. Whether portrait or landscape is up to you!
Your contribution must be flat, so on paper or material that is not thicker than 1mm.

Will I get an edition at the end?
Yes! At the end of the project each participant gets their own edition box. In addition to one's own work, each of them will contain a work of all other participants. The contributions won't be bound in a book but will be assembled as individual items in the box. The edition should be finished in the last week of the winter semester 2019/2020. There will be a small celebration and handover of Edition Boxing in the week 10-14 February 2020.

Is there a topic or can I do what I want?
Edition Weissensee follows Hannah Arendt's suggestion to think about what we do when we are active. What does this mean in the context of an edition? Is it really "only" about reproduction? Or is not the idea of duplication a promise of diversity?

Do I have to work artistically and / or know a lot about printmaking to participate?
No! Anyone who wants to try out the format can take part.
Contributions from students and staff from ALL areas of the school are welcome!
Your contribution may be an idea of what you are doing, a message to the other participants, something you saw and want to share. Again: At the center is the idea of sharing and exchange.
If you would like to get to know the printing workshops, please mention this when registering. Depending on the capacity, there will be the opportunity to give a small introduction!

Until when do I have to give my commitment?
You can register until 6.12.2019 to participate in the Edition Weissensee. To register, please send an email to editionwe@gmail.commit the subject: Registration Edition Weissensee
All communication is done via email - so it is important that you use the email address you use to sign up regularly.

By when do I have to finish my application and submit?
Your contribution must be completed and submitted in full by January 27th. Submission details will be sent via email!

How do you know which post came from whom?
Before you submit your contribution, you should sign it. You can take your real name, or a pseudonym. In addition, you should number your edition. In printmaking this is traditionally often done at the front of the sheet / print, but this is up to you. More information will be sent via email before the deadline.

Is e.g. a photocopy a print?
Yes!

Is a drawing repeating x times a series?
Yes!

Can I take a picture and have it printed x times and submit it as a contribution?
Yes! - You can also pull off x different photos. It would be great if you think about how the photos relate to each other and what it means that each participant has a different photo.

Can I submit a link to a website as a contribution?
Yes! - It is important that you consider that the link works as long as the printed link exists. And it would be great if you think about how the analog link relates to the digital link> materiality, writing, color, size, etc.)

I only do performances - can I participate?
Yes! - there are many ways to make your contribution performative! A guide to the performance (Bruce Naumann), documentation of a performance (Marina Abramovic), etc. Your contribution can also be an invitation to a performance - it is important that the event is AFTER 14.02.2020 (for example in 20 years).

I only work with text, not with pictures, can I participate?
Yes! Text offers a wealth of duplication possibilities. You can work digitally, handwritten, with quotes, your own thoughts, single words, anything is allowed.

I only work in 3D, can I participate?
Yes! - 1mm is also a dimension - albeit a small one! Imagine what you can do with a printed product or a drawing to refer to something three-dimensional.

I only work digitally - can I participate?
Yes! I am excited to see how you will create an analogous reference to your digital works.

I do not know yet if I want to participate - can I cancel later?
No! Well, it will be annoying if there are more commitments than later contributions. Think carefully about whether you want and can participate. You should be willing to make a contribution that does not plunge you into a financial crisis and that is realistic in terms of your time available time - planning is the nuts and bolts of printmaking!

I would like to participate, but have no idea how and what!
No problem - write me an email and we meet - wilkens@kh-berlin.de

Why an edition of Weissensee and who is behind it?
The Kunsthochschule Weissensee is a place where diversity is created and where many different and interesting people work together, meet and contribute to a creative exchange and workplace.
The idea comes from me, Lisa Wilkens. I am here for one year at the KH Weissensee as the first Ludwig Foundation guest professor for printmaking. I am a big fan of projects in which printmaking is questioned and further developed in its conventions and traditions. And I am always happy to share my work with colleagues and to collect their contributions - whether artists, students, staff, etc.!
I see Edition Weissensee as an opportunity to capture this moment and place in its diversity through the contributions of all participants - a small time capsule, so to speak.

You think the project is really great and would like to help with the organisation?
Wonderful! Quickly send an email to wilkens@kh-berlin.de - we need help with various things (writing e-mails, collecting / sorting posts, building boxes, etc.) The more people - the better!

Any questions?
I've definitely forgotten 101 things - just write an email to wilkens@kh-berlin.de

Have fun!
Lisa Wilkens
