The Vanishing City: Lost Architecture and the Art of Commemoration in Berlin

Berlin is the vanishing city, the place of near-obliteration; no other European city lost so much so quickly. Unlike other European capitals, Berlin’s losses were not in the distant but rather in the recent past: The last political system to self-destruct did so less than 20 years ago. For these same reasons, no other city captivates the historical and contemporary imagination like Berlin: Simultaneous to each destruction was the projection of a new model – a new Prussian Berlin, a new fascist Berlin, a new socialist Berlin, a new democratic Berlin. The Berlin story is an archaeology of modernity and its lost utopias. The seminar will explore the sites (e.g. destroyed Prussian castles, Nazi buildings, socialist architecture) and develop methods/means to visualize what disappeared, to decipher what is left, and to understand what is new.
