Another Carpet Unfurled | Sara Hassoune

"Another Carpet Unfurled" explores the potential of woven textiles in creating, defining and modifying space. Textiles are understood not merely as utilitarian objects, but as active spatial elements as well as markers of identity, memory, and cultural heritage.

 

Western culture often falls short in understanding the spatial importance of the carpet, frequently overlooking the profound role it plays in shaping our living spaces. Conversely, in South West Asian and Northern African cultures, carpets carry a multitude of symbolic meanings. They are a place of refuge as well as a place of worship. Central to the project are carpets in Moroccan Amazigh culture. As mobile, interstitial objects, they enter into dialogue with the body and its surroundings. They mark boundaries, create transitions, and open up new forms of interaction, both within physical and symbolic space, fostering community, communication, and comfort.

 

The work additionally focuses on the interplay of material, structure, and multilayered weaving, where three-dimensionality develops not from imposed form, but rather the inherent logic of the weave and the properties of its natural materials.
