Der urbane Raum ist heute meist als
reine Transitzone konzipiert – dominiert
von Materialien wie Beton, Metall und
Glas, die Aufenthaltsqualität vermissen
lassen. Verstärkt wird dieses Defi zit
durch den Klimawandel, der Städte
im Sommer so stark aufheizt, dass ein
längeres Verweilen kaum noch möglich
ist. Soft Shade ist ein textiles Verschat-
tungssystem, das vor Hitze schützt
und zugleich aktiv kühlt. Inspiriert vom
Aufbau eines Laubblattes nimmt es
Wasser auf und gibt es als Verduns-
tungskühlung wieder ab. So bringt Soft
Shade nicht nur Schatten und Kühlung,
sondern auch eine neue, taktile Materia-
lität in den urbanen Raum.

Urban space today is mostly conceived
as a mere transit zone – dominated by
materials such as concrete, metal, and
glass that lack any quality of place. This
defi cit is amplifi ed by climate change,
which heats cities so severely in summer
that lingering outdoors is barely possible.
Soft Shade is a textile shading system that
protects from heat while actively cooling.
Inspired by the structure of a leaf, it
absorbs water and releases it as
evaporative cooling. In this way,
Soft Shade brings not only shade and
coolness but also a new, tactile materiality
into urban space.
