TRACING PATTERNS
Tracing Patterns is a project at weissensee school of art and design berlin that explores the integration of traditional ceramic techniques with advanced digital methods. The project emphasizes understanding the properties and behaviours of ceramic materials in different states, employing techniques like painting, glazing, and casting within a digital framework.
Key concepts include ‚pattern‘, encompassing both surface designs and movement patterns in advanced manufacturing, and ‚tracing‘, linking traditional craft to modern digital technologies.
The project was supervised by Prof. Konrad Jünger and Joana Schmitz, with support from Prof. Barbara Schmidt, Babette Wiezorek and Andreas Kallfelz.
Design Perspective: Experiment
Inspired by monumental structures, our robotic arm carves clay with calculated movements, reflecting the brutalist way of design and honesty in materiality. Each movement, each interaction with the clay, tells a story of care and violence, of delicacy and force. In the interplay of human intention, technological precision and the self-will of the material, we explore the unique nature of the material. Shaped by a technological extension of our body and guided by both intention and chance, amidst the fragments of accuracy, appears the raw beauty of clay.

The project "dots and traces" is experimental research to explore the liveliness of slips. A robotic arm drops slips onto molds and unfired porcelain bodies through an attached plant drip irrigation device. When the slip drop touches the surface, it changes its shape and hardens, leaving traces. Whereas the set-up, with defined viscosities, surface and movement of the robot arm, is given in advance, the ultimate outcome results in an interplay of the set-up with gravity.
