Workshop mit Prof. Rafael Pagatini, UFES, Vitoria/Brasil: How to connect and transcend images
How to connect and transcend images
The workshop aims to present possibilities of associations between images of different periods of recent Brazilian history from a foreign perspective. Photographs of public archives and current images published by the press will be used in order to perceive possible continuities in the construction of a Brazilian imaginary.
Each photograph will be printed using black and white inkjet printers and will be made available to participants without the context of identification, period reference or place of production. Thus participants should try to find relationships and associations between them. In order to do that, during the workshop, they will be invited to manipulate the images by cutting, collage, editing and reprint processes using an inkjet printer and papers with varying weights and transparencies. The materials will be available at the workshop.
From these images by the participants, they will be scanned and edited in an image editing software that will create a grid of lines. After this will be printed using the inkjet printer on thin paper that will be glued on a wood block and can be engraved. This way showing how to transcend a photograph to woodcut.
Therefore, based on the associations and formal constructions created, the group will be invited to think about whether it is possible to think the Brazilian aesthetic, it’s social and political context, only from images.
Participants should bring: Scissors, safety cutters, glue, adhesive tape, medium brush, woodblock (29x21cm).
Equipments needed: Projector and scanner.
