The complete application process begins with the registration for the artistic aptitude test.
You register with the form: Application Form for 2017
At this point of the process you won't need your portfolio or other documents like cv etc., only a proof of language skills (A2/B1/B2) should be uploaded.
In January applicants will get the invitation to the aptitude test, which takes place in February 2017 and starts with the submission of your portfolio and if required your special artistic homework. The examining board reviews the submitted portfolios. It selects those candidates who reveal the artistic qualification for the requested subject. If you are on the shortlist you have to pass artistic tests during 2 or 3 days, that includes also a written exercise and an interview with the examination board. So you have to be in Berlin, also for the risk you don´t get an invitation for the test, it means you can retire after watching the portfolios. If you pass this test successfully you are allowed/invited to apply for admission at the Berlin Weissensee Art Academy, if you comply with all formalities:
1. artistic aptitude
2. qualification for entrance to German University that means a Higher Secondary (School) certificate or alternatively special artistic aptitude
3. proof of German language proficiency: Applicants for the Design departments need for example the certificate: TestDaF 4, DSH 2 or the language proof of the UDK (qualification level C1). For the Fine Arts study programs, applicants need for example Testdaf 3, DSH 1 or the certificate of the UDK (qualification level B2).
4. proof of practical experiences in a study relevant field, 6-8 weeks intern ship, except for applicants in painting or sculpture
An admission can be filed only after having passed successfully the artistic aptitude test, whereupon applicants will receive a corresponding application form from Berlin Weissensee Art Academy. The validity of the test expires after two years. If you don´t pass the test successfully you can repeat it as often as you like.
The first steps to apply:
1. Registration for the artistic aptitude test: Fill in the form you find in the download of the Berlin Weissensee Art Academy. Name the desired course of study and don`t forget to enclose an envelope with your address. You don´t need to add any documents! The portfolio has to be submitted first in February 2017 on the first day of the artistic aptitude test.
2. In January you will receive an invitation to the aptitude test, that will take place in February 2017. Maybe that you get a request that you have to do a special artistic homework.
3. The test starts with the submission of your portfolio and if required your special homework.
4. The examining board reviews the submitted portfolios.
It selects those candidates who reveal the artistic qualification for the requested subject. If you are on the short list you have to pass artistic tests during 2 or 3 days, that includes also a written exercise and an interview with the examination board. So you have to be in Berlin, also for the risk you don´t get an invitation for the test, it means you can retire after watching the portfolios.
5. If you pass this test successfully you are allowed/invited to apply for admission at the Berlin Weissensee Art Academy, if you fulfil the admission requirements.
An admission to the aptitude test will be decided after the review of your portfolio. All applicants will be invited and you are required to submit your portfolio personally. The content of the portfolio naturally varies depending on the faculty you are interested in, but here are some general tips.
There are not too many specifications from the faculties regarding the portfolio, other than the fact that you should include ca. 15 to 20 preferably original works (drawings, paintings, photographs, collages, videos, three-dimensional works or works on canvas must be documented as photographs). All media are permitted. Please make sure, also, that your portfolio is easy to manage, it should not exceed DIN A0.
The concept of the portfolio is entirely up to you and should demonstrate not only basic artistic skills and creativity but also works that are relevant to the program that you are applying to. You should be very selective about your works, as the portfolio is the first part of the entrance exam, you should think carefully about your artistic identity, talents, and goals. Try to avoid works that appear as if you were instructed to create it – it is very important that your creative, artistic personality can be seen in your portfolio. It is also important that your portfolio illustrates that you have continuously and intensively worked on your creative development. The professors place great value on high quality drawings. For inspiration, you can view a range of different student projects on our website or alternativly visit our open days in July.
Information on admission and matriculation for international applicants
In application proceedings, there are no differences between Germans, EU-Citizens or other international applicants, provided international applicants can submit a proof of German language proficiency with the application form in December:
minimum of the qualification level A2/B1 for the Fine Arts programs and B1/B2 for Design departments.
The language of instruction is German in all our courses. As the aptitude test will be also carried out in German it is absolutely necessary to be provided with a sufficient knowledge of German language. Needless to say that most professors speak English very well, so in case of need, you may be able to explain your ideas, aims and motivation also in English.
After a positive decision, you must be presented a language certificate for the admission in April: for example TestDaF 4, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, DSH 2 or the language proof of the UDK (qualification level C1) for Design departments; and Testdaf 3, DSH 1 or the certificate of the UDK (qualification level B2) for the Fine Arts study programs.
In exceptional cases, a proof of the exam registration or a certificate of the B2 / C1 - course is also sufficient for the time being. Please note: The relevant language certificate must be submitted before your studies begin. If you are think you can´t prove the required certificate, you may apply for delay.
Recognition of certificates
First if you pass the aptitude test successfully, you have to apply for admission with the necessary certificates and documents, and these must be submitted in form of an officially authenticated translation in German or English. Foreign higher education entrance qualifications (allgemeine Hochschulreife) must be recognised as equivalent to the German general or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification. An exemption from this is possible if you have a "special artistic aptitude" and its is declared in the notification for the result of the aptitude test. Applicants for the Fine Art programs can be accepted without a higher education entrance qualification, if they provide a certification from a college preparatory secondary school.
Applicants from the People's Republic of China, Vietnam and Mongolia must include the original certificate confirming that the papers have been pre-checked by the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS).
To enrol into the academy of art Weissensee costs about 300 € twice a year (every term) and includes the ticket for the local transport. No tuition fees are required!
